Port Mansfield Wildlife Tour – Lower Laguna Madre

Looking for something different than the usual Port Mansfield fishing charter? This wildlife tour through the Lower Laguna Madre gives you all the beauty of our coastal waters without the pressure of landing fish. I've been guiding these waters for years, and there's nothing quite like a peaceful morning cruise where you can actually relax and take in everything this amazing ecosystem has to offer. Perfect for families, photographers, or anyone who wants to experience the real Texas coast at its finest.

What to Expect on the Water

We'll launch from Port Mansfield and head into the calm, shallow waters of the Lower Laguna Madre – one of the most pristine coastal environments you'll find anywhere along the Texas coast. This isn't your typical high-energy fishing trip; instead, we take our time cruising through channels and flats where the water is crystal clear and wildlife is abundant. The Laguna Madre is actually a hypersaline lagoon, which means it's saltier than the Gulf, creating unique conditions that support an amazing variety of birds and marine life. We keep our group small at just 4 guests max, so everyone gets plenty of space to move around the boat and great photo opportunities. Morning tours are especially popular because that's when wildlife is most active, but our afternoon departures offer their own magic with different lighting and bird behavior patterns. The whole experience runs about 4 hours, giving us plenty of time to explore different areas depending on what's moving that day.

Our Approach & Equipment

I run a shallow-draft boat that's perfect for getting into those skinny water areas where the big tour boats can't go. We'll use a trolling motor in the sensitive areas to keep noise down – wildlife doesn't stick around when there's a lot of engine noise. I've got high-quality binoculars on board for everyone to use, and the boat is set up with comfortable seating and shade so you can enjoy the tour without getting beat up by the sun. We'll pole through some of the shallowest spots, especially around the grass flats where you'll see the most marine life. The beauty of this setup is that we can cover a lot of water quietly, stopping whenever we spot something interesting. I always bring a cooler with ice and water, and you're welcome to bring your own snacks and drinks. The boat has plenty of storage for cameras, bags, and anything else you want to bring along for the ride.

Target Species

Redfish are probably the most exciting thing you'll see on this tour. These copper-colored beauties cruise the shallow flats in schools, and when the light hits them just right, they practically glow underwater. They can get up to 40 inches long, and watching them tail in 18 inches of water is something special. Fall and winter are prime time for big schools, but you'll see them year-round in different areas of the lagoon. What makes it really cool is how curious they can be – sometimes they'll actually follow the boat.

Spotted seatrout are another regular star of these tours. They're gorgeous fish with distinctive spots along their sides, and they love hanging around grass beds and drop-offs. During spring and early summer, you'll often see them in big schools, especially in the morning hours. They're more subtle than redfish but just as fascinating to watch as they cruise and feed. The way they move through the water is almost hypnotic.

Roseate spoonbills are the real showstoppers when it comes to bird life. These pink wading birds look almost tropical, and seeing a flock of them feeding in shallow water is absolutely stunning. They get their color from the shrimp and other crustaceans they eat, and their spoon-shaped bills are perfectly designed for sweeping through the water. Peak season is spring through early fall, and they're most active in the early morning hours.

Brown pelicans are everywhere in the Laguna Madre, and they never get old to watch. These big birds are incredible divers, and seeing them fold their wings and plunge straight down for fish is always impressive. They're curious about boats too, so don't be surprised if one lands right on the bow for a closer look. They're here year-round, but spring brings in the most numbers when they're actively feeding young birds.

Bottlenose dolphins show up regularly, especially in the deeper channels and around the jetties. When they're here, they often travel in small pods and can be incredibly playful. Sometimes they'll ride the boat's wake or just surface nearby to check us out. You never know when they'll appear, which makes every sighting feel special. Summer months tend to be best for dolphin encounters, but I've seen them in every season.
